Passyunk Avenue is a sandwich restaurant and bar from The Liberty Cheesesteak Company, now open on soft launch in Fitzrovia.

The name Passyunk Avenue comes from the street in South Philly where the cheesesteak was born and we know once you taste one you’ll agree they’re among the best sandwiches in London. They’ll be expanding their menu in the weeks to come but for now here’s a little taste of Philly.

The Spot:

We’ve been following these guys for years as we’re huge fans of their cheesesteaks. It’s great to see them open a permanent spot, with a bar to boot.

The Food:

It’s all about those cheesesteaks, of course. They use very thin sliced rib eye steak which is fried up on the hot plate, then loaded into a soft sub roll. They’ll give you some sauteed onions if you ask for them but whatever you do, don’t ask for peppers. An authentic Philly cheesesteak does not have peppers (apparently).

Then, there’s the cheese, which is based on Cheese Whiz, a less than appealing processed ‘cheese’ product from The States. At Passyunk, they make theirs using real cheese and a secret recipe, so you get all the goo with none of the ‘ew’. You need this super melty cheese glue on your sandwich, trust us; it makes the whole thing work. There are other options like American cheese and provolone too, though.

We’re also really pleased to see them doing deli-style hoagies (that’s the name of the long sandwich roll they use) as we don’t have many good, American deli-style sandwiches in London. Choose yours layered with ham, salami, provolone and salad or go for the American with ham and turkey.

The rest of the menu is straightforward: fries, buffalo wings and nachos.

The Drinks:

There is a selection of beers, including American big guns Brooklyn and Sierra Nevada. They’ve also entered into a partnership with Sambrook’s Brewery (both the Pale Ale and IPA are available), meaning they’ll have at least two taps from them at any time, and Passyunk customers will be the first to try Sambrook’s seasonal specials.

The other drink of note here is the Citywide Special, which is a legendary Philly drink of Pabst Blue Ribbon (a beer which is also available by the can), and a shot of Jim Beam.

The Damage:

Cheesesteaks are £10.50-11.50 and they are huge. Sides are £4 and a beer is £4-6. That Citywide Special is £5.50.

In a Nutshell:

As we said, we’re hopeless fans of these guys and have followed them around London since they started out at street food markets. The reason these cheesesteaks are so good is all down to the attention to detail, which makes each sandwich more than the sum of its parts.
