Following the news of PM Boris Johnson successfully suspending parliament, the prospect of a no-deal Brexit on October 31st seems increasingly likely.

According to recent reports, EU nationals account for around 15% of Hospitality workers in the UK and an astonishing 75% of London waiters and 85% of London chefs.

The prospect of Brexit and even more of a no-deal Brexit puts the UK Hospitality business in deep uncertainty. KPMG estimated that a shortage of staff looms over the industry, some venues also having to recruit as far as in Australia to fill the gaps.

While the Brexit situation remains uncertain, there are a few steps that can be taken to help protect the working and living rights of EU staff in the UK.

• First, all EU Hospitality workers must be encouraged to apply to the EU Settlement scheme. It will secure their living and working rights while they’re in the country and will protect them if they choose to remain. It is preferable to apply before Brexit is officially enacted, as future schemes remain uncertain.

• If you encounter any difficulties with the application process, you can reach out to Citizens Advice. They can provide you with information on what your next steps should be.

You can also get in touch with chef Damian Wawrzyniak, who provides help to Hospitality staff navigating the EU settlement process after struggling with his own.
