What is a hospitality Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a great way to get paid while you’re learning a trade. Apprenticeships are available at different levels aimed at everyone from school leavers to people looking to learn new skills for their current job or even looking to change their career entirely.

There are hundreds of schemes to choose from and you can get a qualification, like a degree, at the end of it.

At Greene King we have supported 15,000 apprentices since 2011 and offer more than 30 different Apprenticeships from Level 2, which is worth the equivalent of five GCSEs, to Level 7 (the equivalent of an MBA).

No matter what part of the hospitality industry you want to work in and learn about, Greene King offers an apprenticeship for you. The options include our Bar and Waiting Apprenticeship (Level 2) for people who are new to hospitality and take around 12-15 months to complete and you could work in one of our kitchens, bars and restaurants.

Alternatively, our Apprentice Chef qualification includes a mixture of on- and off-the-job training for aspiring chefs who want to learn and have a passion for food and creating amazing dishes.

Our Kitchen Manager Apprenticeship (Level 3) supports people looking to develop into a leadership role within one of our busy kitchens such as Kitchen Manager. The General Manager Apprenticeship (Level 4) is designed to help our General Managers to learn how to lead by example and run a profitable business.

Beyond that, there is a Business Development Manager Apprenticeship (Level 5) and Senior Leader Apprenticeship (Level 7).

What is it like to do an Apprenticeship in a pub?

A pub is a lively and exciting environment to work in where every day is different. If you do one of our Level 2 Apprenticeships, it will fit around your job role and take around 12-15 months to complete.

The Apprenticeship part of your role will include face-to-face or virtual catch ups with your learning coach every 4-6 weeks, training both off and on the job, including workshops and webinars and feedback sessions to discuss your progress. There is also an opportunity to improve your functional skills in Maths and English if you don’t already have GCSEs.

As a Bar or Waiting apprentice, you’ll work as part of the front-of-house team, learning from more experienced team members around you. You’ll serve food and drinks to the customers at their tables, giving them a good impression of both yourself and the organisation.

An Apprentice Chef will prepare, cook and present food to the expected standard, supported by the rest of the back-of-house team, and make sure the kitchen is clean, tidy and hygienic at all times.

All Level 2 apprentices will also be involved with team meetings and keep up to date with new products, menus and promotions.
